Paper Making & Junk Journaling

Workshop Length: 1-3 class visits

Students work in teams to create handmade paper out of recycled paper and textile fibers, then bind their own individual junk journals out of that paper and other recycled materials. This lesson provides a hands-on experience of a circular system, and emphasizes the reusability of the items around us typically deemed 'trash.' It can be adapted with visual art and creative writing activities.

Deconstructive Engineering through Clothing Design

Workshop Length: 3+ class visits, 5th grade and up

Learn how to operate a sewing machine using reclaimed textiles! Teams of students use the engineering design process to alter or create their own clothes (and beyond) using a sewing machine and textile scraps donated from the community. Students will develop practical, technical skills in sewing, pattern-making, and fabric manipulation, while applying engineering concepts to real-world contexts. At the same time, they will be working collaboratively to problem-solve and realize a creative vision.

Litter Clean-Up & Cyanotype Trash Patches

Workshop Length: 3 class visits

Clean up your school grounds, accompanied by your new trash patch buddy! Each meeting, students will pick up litter around the school grounds and log the data, followed by age-aligned math calculations. They will also design, trace on transparency, and print their own cyanotype 'trash monster' on reclaimed fabric. This lesson introduces the concepts of circular material systems and actionable change, including the limits to litter clean-up efforts that do not address larger structural changes to managing waste.

STEAM Escape Room

Workshop Length: 1-3 class visits

We turn your classroom into a narrative puzzle, and your will have to collaborate as a whole group to complete tasks that blend science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Along the way, they practice leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills while learning to work together and think creatively. It’s an engaging way to build teamwork and make STEAM concepts come to life.

Fire & Water Ecology: Exploring Healthy Watersheds

Workshop Length: 1-2 class visits

Investigate the complex interactions between fire, water, and various ecosystems within watersheds. Students will explore how fire impacts both biotic and abiotic factors in ecosystems, with a particular focus on the Ponderosa Pine biome. The lesson includes hands-on activities where students create biome models using materials like matchsticks, shredded paper, paper pulp and sticks to simulate forest fires and observe the effects on the ecosystems they’ve built.

Team Building & Leadership Development

Workshop Length: 1-5 class visits

Center your group dynamics in this program designed to comprehensive learning progression, comprising a series of challenges each small group of around 10 must work together to complete, is designed in alignment with “21st Century Learning Skills” and focuses on leadership development, collaborative problem solving, teamwork, group communication, and building individual confidence and self-understanding. participants will build trust and understanding among peers, and foster a community-driven culture.
